St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in North Philadelphia reported a $1.1 million operating profit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, a substantial improvement from the $31.6 million loss recorded the previous year.

Medicaid Funding Boost

The financial turnaround is directly attributed to the hospital’s inclusion in a program that increases Medicaid funding for facilities serving a disproportionately large number of low-income patients. This program involves a tax on Philadelphia hospitals, with the revenue redistributed to support these facilities.

Revenue and Patient Volume Increases

St. Christopher’s patient revenue increased by $71 million, rising from $245.6 million to $316.6 million. Hospital inpatient services saw a 14.8% increase in patients during fiscal year 2025 compared to the prior year.

Surgical Trends

The number of inpatient surgeries increased by 7.3%, while outpatient surgeries experienced a slight decrease of 2.2%. The hospital’s emergency department served approximately 51,000 patients.

Financial Stability

The improved financial performance provides a stronger foundation for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children as it continues to serve the healthcare needs of the North Philadelphia community. Both St. Christopher’s and its affiliated organization, Drexel Medicine, have lines of credit expiring at the end of the year, but are anticipated to be extended.
