St. Bonaventure Announces New Head Coach
St. Bonaventure University announced Tuesday the hiring of Mike MacDonald as the new head coach of its men’s basketball program. MacDonald will succeed Mark Schmidt, who recently retired from the position.
MacDonald's Impressive Record
MacDonald returns to his alma mater after a remarkably successful two-year period at Division II Daemen University, located in nearby Amherst, New York. During his time at Daemen, the team achieved a 61-3 record and reached the Division II Elite Eight last week.
National Coach of the Year Recognition
In 2025, MacDonald was honored as the Division II national coach of the year. This recognition highlights his exceptional leadership and coaching abilities.
Extensive Coaching Experience
MacDonald boasts a unique and impressive coaching resume. He has previously served as head coach at Division I Canisius and Division III Medaille, making him the only coach in NCAA basketball history to secure at least 100 wins at each level.
University's Confidence in MacDonald
Bob Beretta, St. Bonaventure’s athletic director, expressed strong enthusiasm for the hire. “We are extremely excited to bring Mike back to St. Bonaventure,” Beretta stated. “Mike checked every box” as the university sought a successor to Mark Schmidt.

Daemen University finished the 2025-26 season with a 33-2 record, securing their second regional championship against Saint Anselm and advancing to the Elite Eight. A significant portion of their victories were decisive, with 31 wins coming by double digits, including 14 by 20 or more points and five by over 30.
The Wildcats’ only two losses were to Gannon and Lander, both national finalists.
