The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and a coalition of advocacy groups held a news conference in Montgomery, Alabama, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, to express their concerns regarding the state’s voting process.
Coalition Calls for Accessible Democracy
The SPLC was joined by organizations including Black Voters Matter, Alabama Forward, the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, Alabama Values, and the League of Women Voters. These groups collectively advocate for what they describe as a “stronger, more accessible democracy” in Alabama.
Concerns Over Voting Rights
Jerome Dees, SPLC Alabama Policy Director, stated that there is an “ongoing attack on voting rights.” He also noted that bills considered to be pro-democracy measures have not been given a hearing in the state legislature.
National Opposition to Voting Restrictions
The SPLC has publicly opposed nationwide efforts to restrict voting by mail or implement mandatory photo ID requirements at polling places. The organization argues that such measures could disenfranchise eligible American voters.
Educating Voters on Legislative Process
The event also served as an educational opportunity for college students, young adults, and other voters. Attendees learned about the lobbying process and received updates on the status of pending legislation currently under debate in the Alabama Legislature.
