National Gas Price Surge
The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline increased overnight to $5.37. Nationally, gas prices are averaging $4.08 a gallon, representing an increase of over $1 since February 28th, when the war in Iran began.
Factors Driving Up Prices
Experts attribute the rising prices to disruptions in oil supplies caused by the war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While still 19 cents below the state’s record high, diesel prices have reached a new peak with a statewide average of $6.71 per gallon.
Tips for Saving at the Pump
Reducing Consumption
GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan suggests motorists can reduce fuel consumption through strategies like carpooling and combining trips. “What motorists can do is try to reduce consumption by either carpooling or combining your trips into one trip,” De Haan stated. “How you drive is a major impact on how any miles you get out of every tank you pump.”
Location and Driving Habits
De Haan also recommends avoiding gas stations directly off interstate highways, as these tend to have higher prices. He advises driving a bit further to find more affordable options. Aggressive driving habits, such as rapid acceleration and high speeds, can also decrease fuel efficiency.
