The possibility of a Super Smash Bros. crossover film has received a discouraging update from Nintendo and Illumination, despite the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the inclusion of characters from other Nintendo properties in its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Disappointment for Smash Fans
The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1 billion worldwide, leading to speculation about a broader Nintendo Cinematic Universe. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features debuts from characters like Pikmin, ROB, and Fox McCloud, further fueling these hopes.
Focus on Individual Films
However, during a recent interview, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri clarified that they are prioritizing immediate projects and aren’t actively developing an interconnected universe. Meledandri explained their process focuses on “what would be fun within a certain scene,” rather than strategic universe-building.
Miyamoto's Perspective
Shigeru Miyamoto stated, “Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation all Nintendo characters would be joining.” He emphasized the unique qualities of the Mario cast, noting, “We have plenty of characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a little bit of spice, a little bit of secret cameos here and there.”
Miyamoto also hinted at potential future character introductions, describing them as “incidental” rather than part of a larger plan. He added, “So I think there might be introductions of characters like this potentially in the future, something like that.”
Incidental Cameos, Not a Universe
Meledandri further elaborated that the inclusion of other Nintendo characters is more about enhancing individual scenes than building a cohesive universe. He described the process as more “incidental” than “strategic.”
