The Philadelphia 76ers are gaining momentum as the playoffs approach, fueled by the resurgence of Paul George and a heartwarming homecoming for rookie VJ Edgecombe. A recent 2-1 road trip culminated in the Sixers moving up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Paul George Rediscovering His Game
Paul George leaned back against a refrigerator inside Capital One Arena’s visitors’ locker room, reflecting on the challenges of returning from injury. He described the frustration of the mind being able to process plays while the body struggles to execute them. “Sorry for the language,” George told the media scrum, “But it is a mindf— when you mentally can see yourself doing things, and you physically can’t do it. That’s the hardest part, I think, for an athlete that goes through injuries and their body’s rejecting them.”
The 35-year-old George has faced multiple setbacks since joining the Sixers, including injuries and a 25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy. However, he maintained his belief that time away from the game would aid his recovery. His recent performance, highlighted by a season-high 39 points on Wednesday, demonstrates his progress.
Coach Nick Nurse also praised George’s defensive effort against the Wizards, with George emphasizing his commitment to defense down the stretch. “That’s been really what unlocked me to kind of play free,” George said of his time away. “ … Feels like I’m back to myself.”
VJ Edgecombe’s Miami Homecoming
The road trip wasn’t without its challenges. The Sixers suffered a late-game collapse in a loss to the Miami Heat on Monday, despite a thrilling comeback win against the Charlotte Hornets two days prior. The team also navigated a brief roster uncertainty when Joel Embiid was initially ruled out of the Wizards game due to illness, a report he quickly refuted on social media.
However, the trip was particularly special for rookie VJ Edgecombe, who received a tremendous outpouring of support in his first NBA game in Miami, a short flight from his native Bahamas. The concourse at Kaseya Center was filled with fans wearing Edgecombe jerseys and waving Bahamian flags.
“That’s who the Bahamian people are,” Edgecombe said. “They’re going to cheer for their own, at all times. Regardless where you are, who you are, you’re from the Bahamas. They’re going to have your back.” Edgecombe spent over an hour after the game greeting fans in the stands, recalling his own days rooting for the Heat and idolizing Dwyane Wade.
Finding Inspiration in Process
Reserve forward Montrezl Harrell has been finding inspiration in the book Chop Wood, Carry Water: How to Fall in Love with the Process of Being Great, which focuses on patience and process. He stated that the lessons in the book “translate tremendously” to basketball and life. Harrell is currently re-reading the book, focusing on the idea that “comparison is the thief of joy” and incorporating positive self-talk into his routine.
Looking Ahead
Following the successful road trip, the Sixers returned to Philadelphia to face a challenging four-game homestand against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, and Houston Rockets. The team’s recent success, coupled with losses from the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, and Miami Heat, has positioned them favorably in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Veteran Kelly Oubre Jr. also reflected on his fond memories of his time with the Charlotte Hornets, expressing pride in their turnaround season. He noted that Charlotte is where he became a father and still maintains a home in the area.
