Vice President Vance Announces New Book on Faith Journey
Vice President JD Vance, who embraced the Roman Catholic faith as an adult, is preparing to release a new book detailing his conversion story later this spring. The publisher, HarperCollins imprint Harper, confirmed the release date to The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The forthcoming memoir is titled 'Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith' and is scheduled for publication on June 16. Vance, 41, joins a growing trend among younger generations, including millennials and Gen Z, who are reportedly turning away from secularism toward the Catholic Church.
Vance Reflects on His Spiritual Path
In a statement provided to the National Catholic Reporter (NCR), Vance addressed the core theme of the book. "The story of how I regained my faith, of course, only happened because I had lost it to begin with," he stated.
He continued by posing a central question for the narrative: "The interesting question that hangs over this book, and over my mind, is why I ever strayed from the path. Why the Christian faith of my youth failed to properly take root."
Political Implications and Past Work
The timing of this book release has prompted speculation regarding Vance's future political aspirations. NCR suggested that publishing a book might signal Vance's intent to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.
The news outlet noted that presidential hopefuls frequently release books before launching official campaigns. This strategy allows them to gain attention from new audiences and solidify their core message. This trend is also observed among potential Democratic contenders.
Previous Success and Policy Stances
HarperCollins previously published Vance’s highly successful 2016 memoir, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' which explored his upbringing in Ohio and was later adapted into a Netflix film.
Reports indicate that Vance has been working on 'Communion' since 2019, the same year he officially converted to Catholicism. He has frequently emphasized the necessity of Christian values for the restoration of America.
In 2025, Vance utilized Catholic theology to support the Trump administration’s deportation policies. He cited the medieval concept known in Latin as 'ordo amoris,' which he described as a hierarchy of care prioritizing family, then neighbors, community, fellow citizens, and finally those from other regions.
Vance's Tenure as Vice President
The Associated Press observed that Vance may be the first vice president in recent memory to publish a book while still holding office. Vance was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Ohio in 2022.
He was selected as President Donald Trump's running mate on the winning 2024 ticket. Vance assumed office at age 40, making him one of the youngest vice presidents in U.S. history. Last April, Vance also met with Pope Francis shortly before the pontiff's passing.
