Seahawks Beat Chiefs 20-3 as Kenneth Walker III Held to 36 Yards in Seattle Return The Seattle Seahawks handed the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season, defeating them 20-3 at Lumen Field as former Seahawk Kenneth Walker III was limited to 36 rushing yards and skipped postgame handshakes. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 at Lumen Field on Sunday night, handing Kansas City its first loss of the season. The Chiefs had entered the game 5-0. Kenneth Walker III Returns To SeattleFormer Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III, who signed with the Chiefs in the offseason, was held to just 36 yards on 14 carries in his return to Seattle. He did not shake hands with former teammates or coach Mike Macdonald after the game. Walker bolted for the Chiefs locker room before the clock even hit zero. A Lumen Field worker stopped him to say hello to a Seahawks staffer before he continued toward the tunnel.Walker played the first four years of his NFL career in Seattle and won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks less than nine months ago. He downplayed the trip back last week, saying, I'm just focused on critiquing the mistakes we made. Once we get to that point, we'll see. The performance was a stark contrast to his production earlier this season.Walker had recorded more than 110 yards in four of the Chiefs first five games and rushed for two touchdowns in each of Kansas City's two previous games. He led the NFL with 665 rushing yards through five contests. Seattle's defense, which ranks second in pressure rate per dropback and first in passing defense at 141 yards allowed per game, contained both Walker and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Seahawks use a two-high coverage scheme built to eliminate explosive plays and lead the NFL in net yards per play at plus 1.9. The Seahawks are the only team ranked in the top five in offensive and defensive EPA, along with offensive and defensive success rate. Kansas City entered with the number one offense in the NFL, but could not score a touchdown. Seattle improved its playoff hopes with the win.The Seahawks opened the season with two wins over the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals, then went just 1-3 since. That stretch included a surprising loss to the Commanders, a win over the Chargers, and two frustrating overtime losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. The Seahawks entered the weekend with a 3-3 record and had 10 days of rest before facing Kansas City.Chiefs Offense Faces Season ChallengesThe Chiefs came in as 5-0 but had missed the playoffs the previous season for the first time in over a decade. Kansas City's offense was without wideout Rashee Rice and right tackle Jaylon Moore. Mahomes has not been his usual unflappable self under duress, and the Chiefs still have questions on offense. Seattle's offense has its own issues. The Seahawks are dead last in rushing EPA and 25th in rushing success rate. That has put more pressure on quarterback Sam Darnold, who is not matching his production from a season ago. Darnold struggled in the Seahawks overtime loss to Denver, going 27 of 51 with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix threw for just 107 passing yards in that game, yet Denver won 17-14.Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald defended Darnold in an October 16 radio interview. He said Sam has played great football for us this year the majority of the time, adding there are other times he needs to take care of the football, but these are solutions we can find with Sam as our QB. In a news conference the same day, Macdonald added, I think we have a lot of faith in Sam. Sam has played great football for us.He has done a lot of great things this year. We have obviously turned the ball over more than we want to. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba headlines Seattle's offense and might be the best receiver in the game. If Darnold can buy time in the pocket, Smith-Njigba will get loose, and the Chiefs defense must limit that to once or twice rather than repeatedly.Defensive Battle Shaped Low Scoring WinThe Chiefs defense grades inside the top 10 against both the pass and the run and has held opponents under 20 points in most of its wins. Seattle's defense may slow down Walker or Mahomes, but doing both at once is a different ask. This had the look of a defensive rock fight and a low-scoring, wire-to-wire affair.Seattle's slow start had placed it out of the playoff picture, and a home loss before another prime-time showdown against the Bears would have been disastrous. The Seahawks understood the importance of this matchup and took advantage of their 10 days of rest. Mike Macdonald and Co. narrowly stole one to hand Kansas City its first loss.
