The enduring friendship between J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison) is central to the beloved medical comedy Scrubs. From their college days to their careers at Sacred Heart, their loyalty has been a constant. However, the revival series on ABC is introducing unexpected challenges to their bond.

A Tradition Interrupted

An exclusive sneak peek from Episode 7, titled “My Best Friend’s Barbecue,” reveals a conflict over Turk’s annual cookout. J.D. is stunned to learn he hasn’t been invited, after sixteen years of attendance. He argues that it’s become a tradition, even referencing an “official song” about the event.

Carla's Decision

Turk explains that the decision came from his wife, Carla, who wants to spend time with Elliot and her new boyfriend, Wes. This understandably creates awkwardness given J.D. and Elliot’s divorce. Despite this, J.D. pleads with Turk to intervene, but Turk is hesitant to confront Carla due to her experiencing “mood swings, night sweats, day sweats,” and constantly wearing sweats.

New Bonds and Familiar Faces

Without an invitation, J.D. seizes the opportunity to strengthen his relationship with Carla at work. Having returned to Sacred Heart as Chief of Medicine, he aims to rebuild their bond. Meanwhile, Turk will be focused on guiding the new interns in delivering difficult news to patients.

Expanding the Cast

The revival has introduced a new ensemble of actors, including Vanessa Bayer, Joel Kim Booster, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, Amanda Morrow, X Mayo, and Michael James Scott.

A Successful Revival & Potential Season 2

The Scrubs revival has been a ratings success for ABC, debuting to 11.36 million viewers across ABC, Disney+, and Hulu – the network’s highest comedy ratings in over a year. The series has also received positive critical reception, boasting an 89% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8/10 review from Collider.

Looking Ahead

Creator Bill Lawrence has expressed his desire for a Season 2 and confirmed that Ken Jenkins, who played Dr. Bob Kelso, will return if the show is renewed. Zach Braff also hinted that the season finale will set the stage for a larger role for Dr. Perry Cox in a potential second season.

Episode 7 of Scrubs premieres tonight on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
