Santa Ana Police Issue Lottery Scam Warning
The Santa Ana Police Department is alerting residents to a prevalent lottery scam following an incident where a 75-year-old woman lost approximately $40,000. The incident occurred on March 19th, highlighting the vulnerability of elderly individuals to such schemes.
Details of the Scam
According to police, the victim was approached by two women while walking near the intersection of Raitt Street and McFadden Avenue. The women falsely claimed to possess a $2.7 million winning lottery ticket but were unable to cash it due to their immigration status.
How the Victim Was Targeted
The suspects persuaded the victim to enter their vehicle and drove her back to her residence. “They get into the suspect's car, and they drive her back to the victim's house, where the victim then proceeds to give them about $40,000 worth of cash and jewelry as collateral, and the suspects take off,” explained Natalie Garcia, public information officer for the Santa Ana Police Department.
Targeting of Elderly Residents
Authorities emphasize that these scams specifically target elderly individuals. “They approach elderly people and victimize them, knowing that many are retired and may have money at home. These individuals are specifically targeted,” Garcia stated. The scammers exploit the trust and potential financial resources of senior citizens.
Ongoing Warnings
Police are urging the public to be vigilant and aware of this type of scam. Residents are reminded not to fall for such schemes and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. This scam has been used repeatedly, and residents should remain cautious.
