Ray-Ban and Meta have unveiled updated versions of their smart glasses, focusing heavily on enhanced customization, particularly for users requiring vision correction. These latest models are part of the existing "Gen 2" lineup but introduce significant upgrades aimed at personalization and prescription compatibility.
Introducing New Customizable Frame Styles
Blayzer and Scriber Optics Launch
EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban, revealed two distinct new frame styles: the Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics and the Scriber Optics. These new options are designed to offer wearers a superior, personalized fit compared to previous models.
The frames feature slightly slimmer designs, adjustable temple tips, and swappable nosepads to accommodate different facial structures. The Blayzer style presents a more square aesthetic, similar to the classic Wayfarer, while the Scriber offers a slightly more rounded look, akin to the "Headliner" frames.
Expanded Prescription Lens Compatibility
As indicated by the "Optics" designation, these new styles significantly broaden lens compatibility. They now support a wider array of prescription lenses, including both progressive and transition lenses.
Both the Blayzer and Scriber frames are available now for pre-order on Meta's website, with general sales beginning on April 14. They come in multiple colors, including several translucent options.
Pricing and Retail Availability
Increased Starting Cost
The introduction of these enhanced features comes with a higher price tag. The starting price for the new optics lineup is set at $499 per pair. This is notably higher than the standard Wayfarer smart glasses, which begin at $379.
It is important to note that the $499 starting price excludes prescription lenses, which can add an additional $200 to $300 or more depending on the specific lens requirements.
Wider Distribution Network
The new lineup will be accessible through a broader physical retail presence. Beyond Meta's website, they will be sold at various EssilorLuxottica distribution points. These include major retailers such as LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Apollo, and Vision Express, among others.
New Software Capabilities for All Users
Despite the higher cost for the new hardware, Meta continues to enhance the software capabilities across its smart glasses ecosystem. These updates benefit all current users of the Gen 2 glasses.
Enhanced AI and Translation Features
New features include expanded language support for real-time translation, now covering Japanese, Mandarin, and Arabic. Furthermore, Meta AI integration now offers food and nutrition tracking capabilities.
Meta AI has also received an upgrade to message handling. Instead of simply reading long chat threads aloud, the AI can now provide summaries of extended message conversations.
