Dayton James Webber, 27, appeared in Charles County District Court via videoconference on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, for a bail review. Judge Patrick Devine ordered Webber to remain jailed without bail after noting he left Maryland following the March 22 shooting of 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells.
Self-Defense Claimed in Shooting
Webber, from Virginia, is charged with first- and second-degree murder, as well as assault and firearm charges. He has not yet entered a plea and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 6. Defense attorney Andrew Jezic told the court that Webber acted in self-defense, anticipating “a lengthy trial” to prove it.
“The truth here is that he would have been a murder victim if he had not acted immediately in defense of his life,” Jezic stated.
Details of the Incident
According to police charging documents, Webber, who lost his arms and legs as an infant due to a blood infection, is accused of shooting Wells twice in the head during an argument. The incident occurred in La Plata, Maryland.
History of Conflict
Deputy State’s Attorney Karen Piper Mitchell stated that witnesses reported the argument stemmed from a gun stolen from Webber by a friend of Wells, and Webber’s displeasure with Wells maintaining a friendship with the alleged thief. Mitchell also revealed a prior incident in 2024 where Webber ordered Wells to leave his home and fired a shot into the air as Wells departed. Jezic maintains Webber fired into the air.
Flight and Arrest
Following the shooting, Webber allegedly asked backseat passengers in his vehicle to help remove Wells’ body, but they refused and alerted police. Webber then fled with Wells still in the car.
Two hours later, Wells’ body was discovered in a yard in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. Detectives located Webber’s car in Charlottesville, Virginia, and found him at a hospital “seeking treatment for a medical issue,” according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

He also authored a piece detailing his journey to becoming a competitive cornhole player, explaining his unique throwing technique using his amputated arms.
