Hungary’s former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced he will not take his seat in parliament following a landslide election loss. Instead, he will focus on rebuilding his political community.
Shift in Hungarian Politics
The April 12th parliamentary election marked the end of Orbán’s sixteen-year rule, with a center-right challenger winning a two-thirds majority. This outcome represents a dramatic shift in Hungary’s political landscape.
Orbán's Future Plans
Orbán announced his decision on Saturday via a video posted on social media. He intends to dedicate his efforts to rebuilding and reorganizing the “national side,” as he refers to his nationalist-populist political community.
Radical Transformation Needed
Orbán indicated his party’s caucus needs “radical transformation” after the election loss. He will remain as president of his Fidesz party, pending a party congress in June, but his immediate focus will be outside of parliament.
Election Results and New Government
The challenger’s party secured a substantial two-thirds majority in parliament, allowing them to reverse many of Orbán’s policies and initiate reforms. The new government has pledged to prioritize the restoration of the rule of law and accountability for corruption.
Historical Significance
The winning party secured 141 seats out of 199 in parliament, the largest majority in Hungary’s post-Communist era. Orbán’s Fidesz party was reduced to 52 seats, a significant decline from their previous 135.
The new parliament will convene on May 9th. This will be the first time since 1990 that Orbán will not be present as a lawmaker. His future role remains uncertain, but he intends to remain a significant force in Hungarian politics.
