Comprehensive Updates for the Mercedes GLE
Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant mid-life refresh for the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé. While officially a late-life update for the seven-year-old platform, the changes are so substantial that company insiders have compared the overhaul to a new generation.
This marks the second update since the fourth-generation GLE SUV and second-generation GLE Coupé were launched in 2019. The latest models feature a fresh exterior look, upgraded technology, and a near-complete interior redesign.
Interior and Technology Overhaul
The cabin has received the most significant transformation. A dashboard-wide Superscreen is now standard, integrating a 14.4-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch instrument display, and a dedicated 12.3-inch touchscreen for the front passenger. Additionally, an 18-inch augmented-reality head-up display is included.
Practicality has also been improved for the seven-seat GLE SUV. The second-row bench can now be moved electronically to provide extra legroom for passengers in the third row.
Performance and Powertrain Upgrades
The range-topping AMG 53 features an updated 'M256 Evo' 3.0-litre turbo petrol straight-six engine. In the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, this engine pairs with a 181bhp rear-mounted electric motor to deliver a combined 577bhp and 553lb ft of torque. Despite the weight of a 31.2kWh battery, the PHEV can accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds.
Key powertrain details include:
- Electric Range: The PHEV offers up to 58 miles of electric-only driving.
- UK Line-up: Four-cylinder engines are being discontinued in the UK. The range now starts with the 282bhp 350d diesel.
- Efficiency: The 450e PHEV produces a combined 322bhp with an electric range of 65 miles.
- V8 Power: The standard range is topped by the 530bhp 4.0-litre V8 turbo petrol 580 model.
All models come equipped with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. The AMG 53 benefits from specific AMG-tuned adaptive suspension and a performance-focused 4WD system.
Exterior Styling and Availability
The updated GLE features a new bumper design and larger grilles integrated with the headlights. AMG Line trims include an illuminated grille, while the high-performance AMG 53 is distinguished by vertical grille struts, larger air intakes, and a quad-exhaust rear bumper.
Pricing has not yet been confirmed, though it is expected to exceed the current starting prices of £78,050 for the GLE and £81,490 for the GLE Coupé. The new models are scheduled to go on sale later this year.
