A dedicated group of programmers and retro enthusiasts is currently developing a completely new 3D survival-horror game specifically for the Sega Dreamcast. This upcoming title serves as an homage to the classic survival horror games released in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Homage to Classic Survival Horror
The genre's formative years were defined by titles that utilized fixed camera angles, dark, oppressive atmospheres, unnerving musical scores, and frequent jump scares to maximize player fright. While the genre has significantly evolved, this new project appears intent on honoring those terrifying roots.
The Unlikely Platform Choice
The announcement that a new game is coming to the Sega Dreamcast has caused surprise, given the console has been commercially defunct for nearly twenty-five years. Developers Philippe Nguyen, Sami Chlagou, and Michaël Rabaioli are pushing forward, describing their creation as “A love letter to the classics.”
Details remain scarce beyond the confirmation of fixed cameras and a dark atmosphere. The only other known detail shared via the X platform post is the ominous tagline: “The darkness is coming.”
The Team Behind the Project
The development is being handled by the team at PixelHeart, a company founded by Philippe Nguyen in 2018. PixelHeart specializes in publishing physical releases for retro gaming systems, making a new Dreamcast title a natural fit for their mission.
Nguyen also founded JoshProd, which focuses on creating new software for consoles like the Neo Geo, Sega Genesis, and the Dreamcast. PixelHeart typically handles the publishing duties for JoshProd's creations.
A History of Retro Development
PixelHeart has already released titles for the Dreamcast and other systems, including the Nintendo Game Boy and the Game Boy Color. The team has previously released Xenocider for the Nintendo Switch, a run 'n gun title reminiscent of '90s side-scrollers featuring intense enemy encounters and massive boss fights.
For nearly a decade, Nguyen and his team have focused on respectfully adding new content to retro systems. Their work honors classic gaming aesthetics while incorporating modern elements that appeal to contemporary audiences.
