Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day recognizing the damaging impacts caused by residential schools and honouring survivors across the country. The Survivors flag flies on Parliament Hill ahead of ceremonies to mark the day. Events and service changes are planned in both Calgary and Toronto. In Calgary, the city will host an Orange Shirt Day Ceremony from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland. The program features keynote speakers, remarks from the Mayor, a moment of silence and cultural performances.Calgary Structures Lit OrangeSeveral structures will be lit orange in honour of the day. These include Reconciliation Bridge, Centre Street Bridge and the Calgary Tower. Calgary Transit will operate on a modified Saturday level of service on Wednesday. On Demand will continue providing regular weekday service.More details are available on the Calgary Transit website. No payment is required for on-street parking in ParkPlus zones on Wednesday. Weekend rates will be in effect at all Calgary Parking Authority parkades and surface lots. Regular rates remain at the Calgary Zoo, Telus Spark, Heritage Park and Stampede Park.The City of Calgary impound lot will be closed. City of Calgary arenas, pools and fitness centres will be closed on Wednesday. The MaxWell Soccer Centre will also be closed. Southland Leisure Centre will be closed.Calgary Facility ClosuresThe Village Square Leisure Centre is closed for upgrades and repairs until the end of 2027. The Wildflower Arts Centre and North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre will be closed. All three Calgary landfills will be open on Wednesday.East Calgary Landfill runs from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Spyhill and Shepard landfills run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. In Toronto, Sept. 30 is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, but it is one for federal government workers and staff at federally regulated businesses. The Government of Canada recognizes it as a federal holiday, so federal buildings and offices will be closed. This includes passport offices, Canada Post, the Canada Revenue Agency and Service Canada.Toronto Service UpdatesThough it is not a stat holiday in the province, some Service Ontario locations will be closed, so residents should check online before going. The library says there will also be an outage until 9 a.m. Wednesday, meaning the TPL app and some online services will be unavailable during that time.The TTC, GO Transit and most regional transit will run regularly. All schools across the province will be open. Most grocery stores and malls will run on regular hours. LCBOs will open at noon, and the Beer Store and Wine Rack will also be open.Toronto Attractions OpenAttractions including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Aga Khan Museum, Casa Loma and the Royal Ontario Museum will be open. The CN Tower will be open, though a portion of the site may be affected. The Toronto sign in Nathan Phillips Square is illuminated orange to commemorate the day. The day is observed as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, in recognition of the harms of the residential school system.
