Milpitas Teen Fatally Stabbed in Afternoon Fight

A vigil was held on Wednesday for 17-year-old Jarred Cavan, who died after being stabbed in a fight just one block from Milpitas High School. Family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of the teenager.

Girlfriend Describes Struggle During Attack

Jarred’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Raya, has spoken publicly for the first time since the incident. The fight occurred Tuesday afternoon shortly after school dismissal. Raya claims she and Jarred were confronted by a larger group.

“They Outnumbered Us”

“They outnumbered us, and there was too many of them,” Raya stated. She described being physically assaulted during the altercation. “They kept hitting me and throwing me to the side. They threw us against each other on the floor.”

Raya sustained a stab wound to her hand while attempting to defend Jarred. She was treated for her injury and had it wrapped in gauze. “I still got back up though…fighting for my boyfriend, doing everything I can to protect him,” she said. She added that she desperately tried to save Jarred’s life before the attacker turned on her.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The Milpitas Police Department responded to the scene around 3:50 p.m. and found Jarred with stab wounds. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect, also a 17-year-old, remained at the scene and was subsequently booked into juvenile hall on charges of homicide and assault with a deadly weapon.

Community Mourns and Seeks Answers

The Milpitas Unified School District is providing resources for students affected by the violence and released a statement expressing sympathy. The vigil took place on the street where Jarred died, with friends and family offering support to one another.

Family Grieves Loss

Jarred’s great uncle, Alberto Bailli, expressed the difficulty of forgiving the perpetrator. “Of course we can forgive, that’s what God wants….I’m just gonna tell the truth, but right now I cannot forgive because it hurts my heart,” Bailli said. He spoke of cherished memories and the pain of losing Jarred too soon.

Loved ones released balloons with messages, including “Long live Jarred,” into the sky. The motive for the fight remains under investigation, and police are requesting any witnesses to come forward.
