NTSB Report Details Merrill Field Aircraft Incident
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its report on an incident involving a Piper PA-22-150 aircraft at Merrill Field Airport. The report outlines a loss of engine power soon after takeoff and the subsequent impact, which resulted in injuries to a passenger.
Sequence of Events
The aircraft, carrying a pilot and one passenger, had arrived at Merrill Field from Kenai Municipal Airport earlier in the day. The pilot initially described the flight as routine. After having dinner, the pair prepared for departure, but shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced a critical engine failure.
Flight Path and Impact
According to the NTSB’s flight path illustration, the aircraft ascended and briefly flew over 5th Avenue before turning back towards the south. The pilot attempted to regain control, but the aircraft ultimately impacted the airport ramp and came to rest on a taxiway.
Aircraft Damage Assessment
The NTSB report details significant damage sustained during the impact. Damage included the outboard right wing, extending beyond the lift strut and right aileron. The right main gear collapsed and folded backward against the fuselage, and the nose gear also collapsed, bending towards the left side.
Furthermore, one propeller blade showed signs of forceful impact, curling backward and leaving marks on the cowling. The passenger sustained injuries classified as “potentially serious,” while the pilot was unharmed.
Ongoing Investigation
Seeking Security Footage
Authorities are currently attempting to obtain footage from an airport security camera that captured the aircraft’s takeoff and landing, both visually and audibly. Alaska’s News Source is pursuing access to this footage to gain further insights into the incident.
The NTSB investigation is focused on determining the cause of the engine power loss and evaluating the pilot’s actions during the emergency. The goal is to prevent similar accidents and enhance aviation safety. This incident highlights the importance of aircraft maintenance, pilot training, and emergency procedures.
