Maryland's Jalen Huskey Projected to Commanders in 2026 NFL Draft

ESPN recently released its 2026 NFL Mock Draft, projecting Maryland safety Jalen Huskey to be drafted by the Washington Commanders in the sixth round with the 209th overall pick. The 2026 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin in just three weeks, on March 30, 2026.

Potential Impact on the Commanders' Secondary

If the prediction holds true, Huskey would become the third active player from the University of Maryland to join the Commanders, alongside safety Nick Cross and tight end Chig Okonkwo. He would aim to bolster a secondary that faced challenges in coverage and tackling during the 2025 season.

Currently, the Commanders' starting safeties are projected to be Nick Cross at free safety and veteran Will Harris at strong safety. Depth is provided by veterans Jeremey Reaves, Quan Martin, Percy Butler, and Tyler Owens.

Huskey's Strengths and Areas for Improvement

Huskey is described as a “ball hawk” with quick instincts, capable of disrupting passing lanes and playing both nickel and safety positions. He is also a reliable tackler with good form.

One area Huskey is focused on improving is his speed, particularly when defending against deep, vertical routes – a crucial aspect of the modern NFL game.

College Career Highlights

During his two seasons with the Maryland Terrapins, Huskey started 22 games. He recorded 117 total tackles, four tackles for loss, seven interceptions, 10 pass deflections, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick.

Huskey's Versatility and NFL Aspirations

Speaking at Maryland’s 2026 Pro Day at Jones Hill House, Huskey emphasized his versatility and work ethic. “I believe I can play any position in the secondary. I’m a great leader, super vocal, and a guy who wants to come in and work. You get a five-position player when you draft me,” he stated.

“It’s been great, playing corner, nickel, and playing safety. It really jump-started my career playing all three positions…I’m extremely grateful for seeing that in me,” Huskey added.

Pre-Draft Meetings

Huskey has reportedly met with representatives from the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots as part of the pre-draft process. His ultimate destination will be revealed at the end of the month.
