Azusa Police Release Video of Man Entering Patrol Vehicle Before Death
The Azusa Police Department has made public security footage documenting the final known moments of Eric Valencia, 37, before he was discovered deceased days later.
The video captures Mr. Valencia exiting the police station, approaching a patrol unit, and entering the rear compartment of an SUV before closing the door.
Details of Eric Valencia's Arrest and Release
Police Chief Rocky Wenrick confirmed details during a recent news conference regarding the incident. Valencia was initially arrested on March 20 on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and child endangerment.
Wenrick stated that Valencia was held over the weekend and subsequently released from custody on March 23. During the initial stop, police suspected intoxication due to watery, bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol.
The chief added that Valencia's blood alcohol level was recorded at twice the legal limit upon his arrest. Upon his release, Valencia was returned his personal property, including his cellphone, and provided with food.
Unusual Circumstances of Release and Discovery
The released surveillance video shows Mr. Valencia leaving the station and then unlawfully entering the back seat of patrol unit 37, according to Chief Wenrick.
Wenrick emphasized that at the time of his departure, "Mr. Valencia was released from custody with no apparent signs of distress."
Three days after his release, Valencia's body was discovered inside the unlocked SUV. The discovery occurred when Chief Wenrick instructed the fleet maintenance crew to prepare the patrol cars for washing.
Ongoing Investigation and Family Concerns
Investigators confirmed that Valencia's cellphone was found inside the vehicle and was in working order. There is no record of him utilizing the phone to call 911 for assistance.
Chief Wenrick expressed the department's commitment to understanding the sequence of events. "We’re gonna do our best in the investigation to figure out why Mr. Valencia walked out and got in the vehicle," Wenrick stated.
The department hopes the investigation will provide necessary closure for the family and clarify the reasoning behind Valencia's actions.
