Coaching Staff Changes at Mainland Regional

Mainland Regional High School is currently seeking a new head baseball coach following the resignation of Joe Smith on Saturday. The departure comes on the heels of a staff shakeup that occurred just one day prior.

On Friday, a volunteer coach was dismissed from the program. According to reports from NBC10, the dismissal and subsequent resignation are linked to concerns regarding a preseason team trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Allegations suggest that a member of the coaching staff visited a strip club during the excursion.

Interim Leadership and School Response

Athletic Director Billy Kern has stepped in to oversee the baseball program on a temporary basis. Kern, who previously served as the school's baseball coach from 2012 to 2024, will manage team duties until a permanent head coach is appointed for the remainder of the season.

Mainland Regional Superintendent Mark Marrone addressed the situation in an official statement. "Our athletes deserve to be in an environment where they are safe, respected, and supported to achieve both on and off the field," Marrone stated. He emphasized that the district takes all reported concerns seriously and is committed to a thorough investigation.

Student Safety and Ongoing Investigation

Superintendent Marrone clarified that no students were involved in the alleged incident or engaged in any wrongdoing. The school district continues to review the allegations, and officials have indicated that further changes to the coaching staff remain a possibility as the investigation proceeds.

Background and Team Status

Joe Smith joined the Mustangs last season after a successful tenure as the head coach at Delsea High School, where he secured South Jersey Group 3 championships in 2005, 2022, and 2024. He also previously held a head coaching position at Williamstown.

Despite the recent administrative turmoil, the team remains active. The Mustangs secured their second win of the season on Monday against Hammonton and are scheduled to face Vineland on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
