Lamar Odom Seeks Treatment for Sobriety

Concerns about the well-being of former NBA player Lamar Odom have surfaced, prompting an update on his current status. According to his manager, Gina Rodriguez, Odom recently took proactive steps regarding his health.

Odom reportedly checked into a 30-day program at iRely Recovery in Los Angeles over a month ago. Rodriguez confirmed that this decision was made following a recent incident that prompted him to reflect on ongoing triggers.

Focus on Marijuana Use and Personal Responsibility

The manager specified that Odom entered treatment to specifically address his use of marijuana. She stated that the former athlete made the "personal decision" to reset and concentrate on his health.

Rodriguez added that Odom is grateful for the support he has received and is committed to moving forward in a positive and healthy manner. He is reportedly taking "full responsibility and choosing to be proactive about his wellbeing."

Context of Recent Legal Issues

This move toward recovery follows Odom's arrest on Saturday, January 17. At that time, he was charged with driving under the influence, along with two related traffic violations.

Odom has previously been very open about his history with substance abuse, which he revisited in Netflix's documentary about his life.

Recalling Past Near-Fatal Health Crisis

The public is keenly aware of Odom's severe health scare in 2015. He collapsed at the Love Ranch brothel in Nevada and required nearly three months of hospitalization.

During that critical period, Odom suffered devastating medical events, including 12 strokes and six heart attacks. Family members were reportedly told to prepare for the worst outcomes.

Odom Describes Survival as Miraculous

Odom himself has spoken about the severity of his condition after waking up. He recounted how doctors informed him that walking and talking again would likely be impossible.

"All of my doctors say I’m like a walking miracle because it’s, like, medically impossible for somebody to survive 12 strokes and six heart attacks while in a coma," Odom stated. He emphasized that he now takes life "day by day" and feels immense gratitude.

He further detailed the extent of his physical trauma: "My heart stopped twice. I had twelve seizures and six strokes. My lungs collapsed and my kidneys ruptured. I was on life support."

Addressing Root Causes of Addiction

Since his recovery, Odom has been candid about the challenges of stopping drug use, noting that quitting marijuana was particularly difficult. He attributed some of his past struggles to significant personal losses.

These losses include the death of his mother when he was 12, and the tragic loss of his 6-month-old son, Jayden, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in 2006. However, Odom stressed that he is not using these events as excuses.

"At this point in my life, I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired. I just want to live my best life and be happy," Odom concluded, expressing his desire to bring happiness to those around him.
