The cities of Lakewood and Rocky River are collaborating on a significant infrastructure upgrade, the $11 million Lake-Clifton Connector Project. This initiative aims to enhance safety and improve the aesthetic appeal of the shared roadway corridor connecting the two municipalities.
Project Scope and Key Improvements
Corridor Coverage and Safety Enhancements
The project encompasses the entire Lake Road and Clifton Boulevard Corridor, stretching from Linda Street in Rocky River to Webb Road in Lakewood. This joint effort involves Cuyahoga County alongside both cities to implement substantial changes for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
A major structural change will see the roadway narrowed from four lanes down to two along the bridge section. This reduction will facilitate the creation of new buffered, on-street bike lanes for improved cyclist safety.
New Features for Pedestrians and Aesthetics
To boost pedestrian safety, the project includes the installation of new crosswalks and rectangular rapid-flashing beacons. Furthermore, the corridor will receive decorative lighting and an increase in overall green spaces.
Lakewood's First Roundabout
A landmark feature of this development will be the construction of Lakewood's first-ever roundabout. This new traffic circle will be situated specifically at the intersection of Lake Road and Clifton Boulevard.
Community Impact and Vision
Restoring Neighborhood Feel
Lakewood Mayor Meghan George emphasized the project's goal of transforming the area. She noted that the road is currently heavily utilized by motorists.
Mayor George stated, "Years ago, in the 1960s, when Route Two came through, it really destroyed the Clifton Park neighborhood. What this is going to do is attempt to bring that back into more of a neighborhood feeling rather than an interstate feeling, than it has today." These changes are intended to create a safer environment while fostering a stronger neighborhood atmosphere in both cities.
Construction Timeline and Detours
Groundbreaking Ceremony Details
Cuyahoga County is scheduled to host the official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will take place directly at the intersection of Lake Road and Clifton Boulevard, where construction will commence.
Traffic Rerouting Information
Lakewood has already established detour routes for all users during the construction phase. Drivers should begin on West Clifton Avenue, transition to Sloane Avenue, follow Detroit Road, and then proceed to Wagar Road to bypass the work zone.
The route for cyclists and pedestrians mirrors the driving detour initially: starting on West Clifton Boulevard to Sloane Avenue and Detroit Road. They will then turn right onto Lake Road, following it to Battersea Boulevard.
