Russia Responds to Trump's NATO Remarks
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that NATO is a “hostile” alliance following remarks by former President Donald Trump suggesting the U.S. could end its membership. Peskov’s comments came while addressing questions about Trump’s views on the Iran War and the future of the military alliance.
Putin's Efforts in the Middle East
Peskov also revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is actively communicating with regional leaders in an effort to resolve the ongoing Middle East conflict. He stated, “The president is continuing these contacts, and if our services are somehow required, we are, of course, ready to make our contribution to ensuring that the military situation transitions to a peaceful course as soon as possible.”
Trump's Criticism of NATO
'Paper Tiger' Assessment
During an interview, Trump indicated that potentially leaving the alliance was “beyond reconsideration.” He further added, “I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”
Growing Dissatisfaction
Trump’s criticism of NATO has been escalating during the Iran War. Relations with European allies were previously strained by the President’s attempt to acquire Greenland earlier in the year.
Strait of Hormuz Dispute
Further tensions arose when European leaders resisted Trump’s calls for assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil supplies that had been effectively blockaded by Tehran during the conflict.
White House Response
Following Trump’s threats, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated, “President Trump has made his disappointment with NATO and other allies clear, and as the President has emphasized, ‘the United States will remember.’”
