The Ellsworth County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at a home in Brookville around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. Deputies and first responders, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, immediately went to the scene to assist the children.
Victims and Medical Response
Despite life-saving efforts, a five-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene. An eight-year-old child was transported by air ambulance to a hospital in Wichita, where they are currently listed in critical condition.
Preliminary Investigation Findings
A preliminary investigation by the sheriff’s office indicates that a young child gained access to a loaded, unsecured shotgun and fired it, striking both siblings. The age of the child who fired the weapon has not been released.
