Jen Shah, former star of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” has broken her silence after being released from prison in December 2025, following a three-year sentence at the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas.
Taking Responsibility for Past Actions
“I was wrong. I made wrong decisions. I should have done things differently,” Shah told People magazine. She added, “I’m deeply remorseful and sorry for my actions and for my part. I take full responsibility.”
Disregarding Red Flags
Shah explained that she initially believed she was entering into a legitimate business venture but ultimately “disregarded huge red flags.” She described the situation as “a long and a very complex journey” and acknowledged making “horrible business decisions.”
Blurred Lines and Trust
The former reality star stated she “allowed the lines to be blurred between personal friendships and ethical business practices.” She admitted to trusting the wrong people during a vulnerable period in her life, believing she was acting in good faith for most of the time.
Unaware of the Full Extent
Shah alleged that the fraudulent activity extended beyond her initial understanding. “Once that initial fulfillment was happening, things were happening beyond the point of sale with that customer that I didn’t know about,” she explained to the outlet.
Personal Struggles During Arrest
At the time of her arrest, Shah was facing personal difficulties, including a separation from her husband, Sharrieff Shah, and the recent loss of family members. She also revealed she was struggling with previously diagnosed clinical depression. However, she emphasized that these factors were not excuses for her actions.
Prison Experience
Describing her initial reaction to the prison facility, Shah said, “You hear people say it’s ‘Camp Cupcake’ — it’s not. It’s prison.” She admitted to being shocked by the reality of her surroundings.
Commitment to Restitution
Now back in Utah with her family, Shah is focused on making amends, including paying over $6.5 million in restitution. “I’m sorry,” she stated. “I’m accepting responsibility, and I’ve made it my mission to make sure that people are paid back.”
Jen Shah was originally sentenced to six and a half years in January 2023.
