Former 'Real Housewives of Salt Lake City' star Jen Shah is speaking out in her first interview since being released from federal prison in December. Shah pleaded guilty in 2022 to orchestrating a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme that specifically targeted elderly individuals, resulting in a 6.5-year prison sentence.
Acceptance of Responsibility and Remorse
In a recent interview with People Magazine, Shah expressed profound regret for her actions and fully accepted responsibility for the harm caused to victims. She described a shift in her perspective, moving from initial claims of innocence to acknowledging the devastating impact of her crimes. Shah emphasized her dedication to making amends through restitution payments.
Early Release and Prison Experience
Shah was released from Bryan prison in Texas in 2023, more than four years before the completion of her original 6½-year sentence. She recounted the initial shock and difficult adjustment to life behind bars, describing the emotional toll of incarceration, including experiencing silent tears on her first night.
High-Profile Inmates
During her time in prison, Shah formed relationships with other well-known inmates. She shared a connection with Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, and also had limited interactions with Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of sex trafficking. Shah and Holmes bonded over shared living conditions, including cleaning duties in their unit.
Life Inside and Lessons Learned
Shah provided insights into the realities of prison life, detailing assigned tasks, living conditions, and the varying treatment of inmates. She reflected on the lessons she learned during her incarceration and her determination to rebuild her life. She also discussed her efforts to advocate for fellow inmates alongside Elizabeth Holmes.
Restitution and Future Plans
Upon her release in 2023, Shah was ordered to forfeit $6.5 million and numerous luxury items as part of the restitution process. She stated to People that she is currently working to fulfill her restitution obligations. “I’m sorry,” Shah told People. “I’m here, accepting responsibility, and have made it my mission, as part of my consequences and my responsibilities, to make sure that people are paid back through the restitution.”
Shah was initially arrested by the FBI in March 2021, while cameras were rolling for the Bravo series. At the time, she maintained her innocence, famously declaring she was “Shah-mazing.” She initially attributed the accusations to her work with other companies, stating she “truly believed in my innocence.”
