Based on Alan Hunter’s Novels

The series is loosely adapted from the novels penned by Alan Hunter. It centers around Inspector George Gently, portrayed by Martin Shaw, a principled police officer transferred from London to the North East of England during the mid-1960s.

A Dynamic Detective Duo

Inspector Gently is joined by DS John Bacchus, his astute and quick-witted protégé. Bacchus provides both insightful assistance and engaging banter as they navigate the complexities of a nation undergoing a cultural shift.

Setting the Scene: Northern England

The drama unfolds against the backdrop of Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, and County Durham. The setting plays a crucial role in highlighting the “Northern Soul” and the societal tensions of the era.
