Iran Intensifies Executions Amidst Uprising Fears
The Iranian regime has initiated a series of executions, raising alarm among international observers. This escalation is reportedly driven by a growing fear of another citizen-led uprising as the government navigates ongoing conflicts with the US and Israel.
Recent Executions and Condemnation
According to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), at least four members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) have been executed in the last 48 hours. The NCRI asserts these executions are intended to “intimidate” the population and “exert control.”
NCRI Statement on Regime Intent
Mohaddessin of the NCRI stated, “The execution of four PMOI members, amid an external war is a clear admission by the regime that it views the Iranian people and the organized Resistance as its principal enemy and an existential threat.” He further explained the timing of the executions is linked to the regime’s concerns about domestic instability and the potential for renewed protests.
Wider Crackdown Anticipated
The NCRI warns that further executions are expected, with death sentences for 15 others already confirmed by the Supreme Court. Approximately 2,000 members of the PMOI’s Resistance Unit, detained during a January uprising, are also at risk.
Historical Parallels and Concerns
The NCRI has drawn comparisons between the current situation and the 1988 Iranian massacre, in which an estimated 30,000 political prisoners were killed. This raises fears of a broader suppression of dissent across the nation.
Context of Regional Tensions
These executions follow a period of heightened regional tensions, including a devastating Israeli airstrike on February 28 that killed dozens of Iranian military commanders. Iran’s president has also sent a propaganda letter to Americans, claiming the nation poses no threat.
Regime Vulnerability and Future Uprisings
Mohaddessin believes that the regime is attempting to create an atmosphere of fear to prevent youth from joining the PMOI and ultimately prevent its overthrow. He stated, “This war will eventually come to an end…leading to even stronger uprising and the regime will appear significantly more vulnerable.” He emphasized that a combination of popular uprisings and organized resistance is the key to overthrowing the current government.
Call for International Action
The NCRI has urgently called upon foreign leaders and the United Nations to intervene and halt further executions, stressing the international community’s “obligation” to act.
