Marvel fans received a special treat this week with two new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again. Episodes 2, “Shoot the Moon,” and 3, “The Scales & the Sword,” focused on Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Karen Page, and their allies intensifying their efforts against Mayor Wilson Fisk.
Kingpin's Counterattack and a New Hero's Emergence
The episodes saw Kingpin retaliate fiercely, nearly defeating Matt and Karen and framing them for a terrorist act aboard the Northern Star freight ship. Amidst this conflict, a new hero emerged within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stepping into the role of a previously underappreciated vigilante.
Introducing Angela del Toro – White Tiger II
Season 1 introduced Hector Ayala, a street vigilante known as “White Tiger.” After being successfully defended in court by Matt Murdock, Hector resumed his patrols. However, his death deeply affected his niece, Angela del Toro, who vowed to continue his mission of improving their neighborhood.
In Episode 2, Hector’s wife, Soledad, was targeted by the AVTF while defending a local shopkeeper. Knowing Fisk’s forces permanently eliminate those they capture, Angela sought help from Kirsten McDuffie, Matt’s former law partner. Kirsten possessed Hector’s White Tiger costume and gear, which Angela utilized.
White Tiger II's Debut and Comic Book Origins
During a daring prison break orchestrated by Daredevil and Karen in Episode 3, the plan went awry. Angela arrived to assist Karen, using the mystical totem and her uncle’s weapons as White Tiger II. She played a crucial role in the escape, preventing Kingpin’s forces from pursuing them.
The character of Angela del Toro as White Tiger is rooted in Marvel lore. In the comics, she is White Tiger IV, the niece of the original White Tiger, Hector Ayala. The comic book version is an ex-FBI agent who investigates Daredevil and her uncle’s talismans, eventually being trained by Daredevil herself.
Blending Comic Book Versions
The MCU’s White Tiger II appears to be a blend of Angela del Toro and Ava Ayala. Ava was Hector Ayala’s younger sister, a teenager in contrast to the adult Angela in the comics. The MCU version may draw inspiration from both characters, potentially leading to future storylines and team-ups.
