Honda Confirms Production of 0 α SUV in India

Following the cancellation of plans to build the 0 Saloon, 0 SUV, and Acura RSX EVs in the US, Honda has confirmed production of the smaller 0 α SUV in India. This decision aims to leverage lower production costs and capitalize on the company’s existing EV investments.

Testing and Development in India

Honda began testing the all-electric 0 α SUV in India last month, subjecting it to diverse driving conditions. Engineers are evaluating its performance in extreme heat, monsoon environments, and assessing its charging capabilities. This rigorous testing phase is crucial for adapting the vehicle to local conditions.

Strategic Production and Export Plans

The decision to manufacture the 0 α SUV in India is a strategic move for Honda, allowing the company to benefit from reduced labor costs. The vehicle will be built and sold within India, and exported to Japan, as well as other unspecified “key markets.”

Distinction from the US-Bound 0 SUV

Design and Affordability

The Honda 0 α SUV, unveiled as a concept in late 2025, closely resembles the 0 SUV originally intended for the US market. However, the 0 α is smaller and designed to be more affordable. Its distinctive tall rear end sets it apart from many other SUVs currently available.

'Thin, Light, and Wise' Approach

Developed under Honda’s ‘Thin, Light, and Wise’ philosophy, the 0 α SUV will feature a thin and lightweight battery pack. Battery capacity details have not yet been released. Honda is also prioritizing a low center of gravity by mounting batteries and power units as low as possible.

Launch Timeline

Honda anticipates introducing the 0 α SUV during the 2026-2027 financial year. The initial launch is expected to occur in India and Japan, with subsequent expansion to other regions. Honda stated, “The start of pan-India Public Road Verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey.”
