Vandalism Causes Significant Damage to Harrisburg Park

Harrisburg officials are investigating a significant act of vandalism at a city park located near 7th and Radnor streets. Mayor Wanda Williams reported that the damage, discovered recently, is estimated to cost between $40,000 and $50,000 to repair.

According to the Mayor, the perpetrators gained access to the facility by climbing over a six-to-seven-foot-high fence, despite the gates being locked. The damage includes destroyed benches, torn rubber surfacing on the playground, and debris such as food and trash scattered throughout the area.

City Response and Security Upgrades

In response to the incident, the city is taking immediate action to secure the location. Mayor Williams stated that additional locks are being installed, and the city plans to install surveillance cameras within the next two weeks.

The city intends to file formal charges against the individuals responsible once they are identified. Officials noted that the vandals left their initials on the sidewalk, which may assist in the ongoing investigation.

Public Safety and Future Access

Mayor Williams has requested that parents keep their children out of the park until repairs are completed, which is expected by May 1 or May 2. She emphasized the city's significant financial investment in the park, which is intended to provide a safe space for children to play and remain active.

The Mayor issued a stern warning regarding future unauthorized access. She stated that the city will hold parents accountable if they allow their children to enter the park while it remains closed for repairs.
