A 57-year-old German tourist has died in Hurghada, Egypt, after being bitten by a cobra during a snake show in early April. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death.
Fatal Snake Bite Incident
The tourist, from Bavaria, Germany, was bitten during a performance at a local hotel. He was with three family members at the time of the incident. Reports indicate the show involved close interaction with snakes, including allowing tourists to handle them.
Details of the Attack
According to reports, the snake charmer allowed the cobra to move up the tourist’s trouser leg, resulting in the bite. The man quickly displayed symptoms of poisoning and suffered cardiac arrest, requiring immediate resuscitation. Despite swift transport to a hospital, he succumbed to the venom.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is being led by the public prosecutor's office and criminal police in Memmingen. While the snake charmer is not currently the primary focus, all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly examined. Results from a toxicological examination are pending to determine the venom’s impact.
Pattern of Tourist Tragedies
This incident adds to a growing number of dangerous encounters for tourists in the Hurghada region. The Red Sea resort has experienced several tragic events, including fatal shark attacks and a recent submarine sinking.
Recent Shark Attacks
In December, 48-year-old Italian tourist Gianluca Di Gioia was fatally attacked by a tiger shark while snorkeling off Marsa Alam. He was celebrating his birthday when the shark approached him and his friend, resulting in his death.
Prior to that, in June 2023, 23-year-old Vladimir Popov, a Russian national, was killed by a tiger shark in Hurghada. Witnesses reported Popov screaming for help before being dragged underwater. The shark was later killed by locals.
Submarine Sinking
In March of this year, the Sindbad submarine sank in Hurghada, resulting in the deaths of six people, including two children. Thirty-nine individuals were rescued, but nine sustained injuries after the submarine submerged with its hatches open.
Safety Concerns and Response
These recurring incidents raise concerns about safety standards and risk management for tourists in Hurghada. Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances of the cobra bite and whether negligence played a role. The German consulate is assisting the deceased’s family, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
