Megadeth surprised fans in Bogotá, Colombia, with the debut live performance of Metallica’s ‘Ride the Lightning,’ a song Dave Mustaine originally contributed to.
Historic Performance in Bogotá
The performance took place on Sunday, April 26th, and featured a setlist blending nostalgic favorites with a highly anticipated cover song. Megadeth delivered a captivating show that acknowledged both their origins and their recent work.
From 'The Mechanix' to 'The Four Horsemen'
The band also performed “The Mechanix,” a song written by Dave Mustaine during his time with Metallica. This track served as the foundation for Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen.”
'Ride the Lightning' Debut
However, the highlight of the evening was the first-ever live rendition of Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning.” Despite no longer being with Metallica when the song was finalized, Mustaine retains a songwriting credit for its distinctive riffs.
A Shared Musical History
Fan-captured footage shows a powerful and respectful performance of “Ride the Lightning.” Dave Mustaine handled vocals with his signature energy, while the band skillfully recreated the song’s complex arrangement.
A notable moment occurred during the guitar solo, where Mustaine and guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari traded sections originally performed by Kirk Hammett. The crowd enthusiastically sang along, demonstrating their appreciation for both bands.
Cover on Latest Album
This performance followed the release of Megadeth’s cover of “Ride the Lightning” on their self-titled 17th album, released in January. The album is widely speculated to be the band’s final studio recording.
Mustaine's Reflections
Dave Mustaine’s relationship with his former Metallica bandmates has been complex. However, he explained in an October interview that covering “Ride the Lightning” was a gesture of respect and a way to address any lingering feelings as he considers retirement.
Mustaine recognized his own songwriting style within the song, pointing out similarities between “Ride the Lightning” and Megadeth’s work, particularly in the guitar playing. He also referenced songs like “Leper Messiah” and material from their first album.
