Georgia Tech's Baye Ndongo Enters Transfer Portal
Georgia Tech men's basketball is facing its first roster change of the offseason as forward Baye Ndongo plans to enter the transfer portal. The news was initially reported by ESPN's Jonathan Givony, with agent Mike George confirming the decision to DraftExpress.
Ndongo, a 6-foot-9 junior, has been a consistent starter and impact player for the Yellow Jackets across the last three seasons. While there remains a possibility he could return to play for Coach Scott Cross, his entry signals a significant potential loss for the team's veteran presence.
Ndongo's Impressive Statistical Output
The forward put up strong numbers during his time in the ACC conference. Across 27 appearances this season, Ndongo averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 37 minutes per game.
He started all 27 games he played, missing four contests due to injury. Ndongo led the Yellow Jackets in rebounding, averaging 8.1 boards per game, and ranked second in scoring production.
- Field Goal Percentage: 55.6%
- Free Throw Percentage: 71.6%
- Three-Pointers Made: Five on the season
Furthermore, Ndongo was a defensive force, leading the team in blocks while ranking third in both steals and assists. His performance placed him among the ACC's statistical leaders.
ACC Rankings and Season Accolades
Ndongo secured several high rankings within the competitive ACC league play. He finished sixth overall in rebounding, seventh in offensive rebounds, and eighth in defensive rebounds.
His shot-blocking prowess placed him 15th in the league for blocked shots. Ndongo achieved five double-doubles and recorded 19 games scoring in double figures, including three contests where he surpassed 20 points.
In ACC-only games, he ranked third in scoring and led the team on the glass, shooting 53.0% from the field during league matchups.
Recognition and Future Implications
Ndongo’s consistent high-level play earned him recognition heading into the 2024-25 season, as he was voted to the Preseason All-ACC second team. At the conclusion of the season, he earned a spot on the All-ACC third team.
He started the last 63 games for Georgia Tech, dating back to the 2023-24 season against Cincinnati, establishing himself as a premier interior scorer, rebounder, and defender in the conference.
Losing Ndongo necessitates that Coach Cross address the need to replace a key veteran presence. This departure marks the first transfer portal entry for Georgia Tech this offseason, prompting questions about future roster moves.
The focus may now shift to retaining younger talent like Jaeden Mustaf, Mouhamed Sylla, and Akai Fleming, who could form a strong core alongside new portal additions under Cross.
