Donald Glover Reconsiders Childish Gambino Retirement

After announcing his intention to retire his rap persona, Childish Gambino, two years ago, Donald Glover is now hinting at a possible return. Glover suggested in 2024 that he would cease releasing music under the moniker following his final album, feeling he no longer needed to create in that specific manner.

However, the Grammy-winning artist appears to be reconsidering a complete farewell to his musical side project. This shift in sentiment was revealed during an interview at the Japanese premiere of a new video game adaptation movie this week.

The Reporter's Inquiry Sparks Revelation

A reporter lightheartedly confronted Glover about fan dissatisfaction regarding the supposed end of Childish Gambino. She mentioned that even frequent collaborator, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, expressed surprise that Gambino was definitively finished.

Playfully asking, "Why are you putting me out there?" Glover admitted his enduring passion for creation. "I still really love making music. I don’t think that’s ever going to go away," he stated.

Music Creation Remains a Personal Joy

Glover clarified that his love for making music persists, even if it remains private. He confirmed he possesses numerous songs created solely for his own enjoyment, though he quickly dismissed any notion of hoarding them.

When teased about being "greedy," Glover emphasized his core motivation: "I just … I just love making it! … I like telling stories." He concluded that if he creates something he believes merits an audience, he will certainly release it.

Childish Gambino's Notable Achievements

Under the Childish Gambino name, Glover has released five official studio albums, alongside more than a dozen mixtapes and four EPs. His 2016 album, "Awaken, My Love!", achieved significant commercial success.

"Awaken, My Love!" peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and remained charted for 124 weeks. This followed his 2013 release, "Because the Internet".

Furthermore, his 2018 single, "This Is America," co-written with Göransson and Young Thug, reached the coveted No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 chart. Other charting singles include "Redbone" (2016), "Summertime Magic" (2018), and "Feels Like Summer" (2018).
