Fans of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones have much to anticipate, with several new projects expanding the beloved universe. 2026 has already seen the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a spin-off series starring Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell.

Expanding the ‘Game of Thrones’ Universe

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offers a more intimate story compared to the original series and House of the Dragon, focusing on a jousting tourney over a few days. The series has been renewed for a second season, slated for release next year. House of the Dragon Season 3 is also confirmed to premiere this summer.

‘Game of Thrones: The Mad King’ Stage Play Details

Earlier this year, George R.R. Martin announced a new project: a stage play detailing the story of The Mad King Aerys, who was ultimately defeated by Robert Baratheon. The play, officially titled Game of Thrones: The Mad King, will premiere on July 20th and run through September 5th at the Royal Shakespeare Theater in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Creative Team and Synopsis

Duncan Macmillan adapted Martin’s novels for the stage, and the play is being directed by Dominic Cooke. The official synopsis describes the play as “a sweeping new stage epic…revealing a legendary chapter of Westerosi history.”

The synopsis further states that audiences will encounter familiar characters from houses Targaryen, Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, and Martell, witnessing the events that “set the stage for the world’s most critically acclaimed series.”

A ‘Game of Thrones’ Film in Development

In addition to the stage play and existing series, Warner Bros. is developing a blockbuster film centered around Aegon’s conquest. Beau Willimon, known for his work on House of Cards and Andor, is writing the script. Details remain scarce as the project is in early development.

Game of Thrones and its spin-offs are currently available on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates on The Mad King stage play and other Game of Thrones projects.
