FIFA Chief Insists on Fixed World Cup Schedule Amid Iran Uncertainty

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has definitively addressed speculation surrounding Iran's participation in this summer's World Cup. He made it unequivocally clear that the organization fully expects the Iranian team to compete as scheduled.

When pressed about alternative scenarios, Infantino stated firmly, “There is no Plan B, C or D. There is only Plan A,” emphasizing the commitment to the original itinerary.

Geopolitical Tensions Complicate Group Stage

Iran's involvement has faced scrutiny due to the ongoing conflict with the United States, one of the three co-hosts alongside Mexico and Canada. Notably, all three of Iran's scheduled group matches are set to take place within the U.S.

Iranian officials have issued conflicting statements throughout March, ranging from calls for a complete boycott to declarations of defiant participation. One official stated, “We will boycott America, but we will not boycott the World Cup.”

FIFA's Role: Sports Over Politics

Infantino stressed FIFA's mandate as a sports organization, separate from resolving international disputes. “FIFA cannot resolve geopolitical conflicts; we are a sports organization,” he asserted.

He added that FIFA aims to “use the power of soccer to build bridges.” The organization expects all participating teams to compete with mutual respect and fair play according to the established plan.

Ruling Out Venue Changes

The possibility of relocating Iran's matches outside the U.S. was raised, with Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo suggesting Mexican venues could be utilized. However, Infantino appears to have shut down this option.

The schedule, announced back in December 2025, remains fixed. “Our principle is to proceed as planned,” Infantino confirmed, noting regular contact with the Iranian Football Federation.

He highlighted the passion of Iranian fans and the team's qualification earned “on the pitch.” The goal is to deliver a successful tournament across all 16 host cities.

Security Concerns and Counter-Warnings

Earlier in March, Iran's sports ministry issued a directive banning national and club teams from traveling to nations deemed “hostile,” pending assurances of security. This statement did not explicitly name the U.S., but safety concerns on American soil have been a central issue.

Former President Donald Trump recently commented that it would not be “appropriate” for Iran to attend due to safety concerns for the team members. Trump subsequently insisted via social media that the World Cup would be the “Greatest and Safest Sporting Event in American History.”

Iran issued a counter-warning, stating that only a host nation incapable of guaranteeing security could face exclusion, implying that Iran itself could not be removed from the competition.
