New York dance band Fcukers is captivating audiences with their debut album, Ö. The album proves they are more than just a one-off club hit, establishing them as a significant force in the dance music scene.
From Club Roots to Debut Album
Formed in 2022 by Shanny Wise and Jackson Walker Lewis, Fcukers honed their skills through years of experience in indie bands and performing in New York City’s vibrant nightlife. Their sound draws inspiration from 90s and 2000s dance music, echoing the lo-fi aesthetic of artists like Le Tigre and LCD Soundsystem.
UK Influences and Musical Exchange
Despite their New York base, both members acknowledge a strong connection to British music. Lewis shared that his father’s love for bands like Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, and Primal Scream heavily influenced him. He even studied at Goldsmiths University in London, immersing himself in the city’s club culture. “New York and the UK have such a great back and forth musically,” Lewis explained.
The Sound of Ö
Ö builds upon the band’s earlier work, including their breakout track “Bon Bon,” with a more maximalist approach. The album seamlessly blends genres, from drum ‘n’ bass and dub to downtempo trip-hop, while maintaining a cohesive narrative that mirrors a night out.
The album features tracks like “Getaway,” evoking a sense of comedown, and “Feel the Real,” with lush strings representing a sunrise. Wise’s vocals and the band’s unique style contribute to a distinctly Fcukers sound.
A Rapid Album Creation
After signing with Ninja Tune in early 2024 and releasing their EP Baggy$$ in September of that year, the duo felt pressure to deliver a successful debut album. They initially struggled with the creative process, even considering postponing new music altogether.
Collaboration with Kenny Beats
A turning point came during a collaboration with producer Kenny Beats at Coachella in the summer of 2024. What began as a morning studio session quickly evolved into a week-long burst of creativity. “We ended up canceling all our plans and cranked it out in the following two weeks—it was so super fast-paced,” Wise recalled.
Live Performance and Future Plans
Fcukers prioritize a visceral live experience, performing with a full band and no computers on stage. This approach stems from their background in indie bands. They are currently embarking on a US headline tour and will support Harry Styles in Brazil this July, playing to audiences of up to 70,000 people.
“We just try and carry the vibe wherever we go,” Wise stated. Both members express gratitude for their success, acknowledging the journey from small gigs to large-scale performances. “I don’t take it for granted for a second,” Wise added. Lewis jokingly admitted, “We’re definitely not rich, though. I would gladly take more money!”
