FBI Team Investigates February Shootout in Cuba
An FBI technical team is currently in Cuba to investigate a shootout that occurred in February between Cuban soldiers and the crew of a boat traveling from Florida, according to two sources familiar with the visit. This visit by US law enforcement to Cuba is considered rare, especially given the heightened tensions between the two nations.
Details of the Incident
Cuban officials allege that a boat carrying ten individuals arrived from Florida in late February with the intention of “an attempt to overthrow the government.” A subsequent shootout with Cuban border guards resulted in the deaths of four boaters and injuries to one Cuban soldier. A fifth boater later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total fatalities to five.
Weapons and Charges
According to Cuban authorities, the boat contained a significant arsenal, including assault rifles, ammunition, bulletproof vests, and Molotov cocktails. The five surviving individuals are now facing terrorism charges within Cuba’s legal system.
US Citizen Involvement and Cuban Nationality Laws
US officials confirmed in February that at least one deceased individual and one survivor were US citizens. However, Cuban officials have identified all involved as Cuban nationals, a position stemming from the country’s policy of not recognizing dual citizenship and considering anyone born in Cuba as a Cuban citizen.
Cooperation and Independent Verification
In March, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced that FBI agents would be permitted to conduct an investigation on the island in collaboration with Cuban officials. A US official stated that American investigators will independently verify the events of the incident, rather than relying solely on information provided by Cuba.
The official further emphasized that the United States will prioritize protecting US interests and the well-being of US citizens involved in the case. CNN has contacted the FBI for comment.
