Months after Edward Trejo was fatally shot at a Christmas party in December, his family is demanding explanations for the delayed review of his case by the District Attorney’s office.
Concerns Over Timeline
Andrea Trejo, Edward’s mother, stated that a prosecutor informed her the case review began just 10 days before the 90-day deadline for presenting it to a grand jury. She was subsequently told that the suspect was being released and the case dismissed less than two weeks later.
Family's Frustration
“They said, Honestly, we don't know. We gave them enough evidence for them to prosecute him...” Andrea Trejo expressed her confusion, questioning how the evidence could have been adequately presented to the grand jury in such a short timeframe. She also questioned why the review took so long to begin, given the availability of multiple videos and witness statements.
Witness Testimony
David, a witness and the property owner where the shooting occurred, reported being contacted by the District Attorney’s office only hours before the case was presented to the grand jury, seeking any additional information. He had previously only spoken with homicide detectives regarding the incident.
Legal Perspective
Sigrid Vendrell-Polanco of the St. Mary’s University School of Law explained that cases typically undergo several weeks of review before grand jury presentation. However, she acknowledged that there may be unseen activity occurring within the District Attorney’s office.
Ongoing Pursuit of Answers
The Trejo family has stated they will continue to contact the District Attorney’s office to obtain answers to their questions. When pressed for comment, the District Attorney’s office reiterated the case’s status and declined to provide further details at this time.
