Esai Morales on Portraying a Ranger in Netflix's 'War Machine'
Netflix's recent sci-fi action film, 'War Machine,' has quickly become a popular success, garnering nearly 40 million views in its opening weekend. The movie features an impressive ensemble cast supporting the lead, including veteran actor Esai Morales.
Morales takes on the role of the formidable Ranger Sergeant Officer Torres. He shared with Space.com that he thoroughly enjoyed the shooting experience. Playing military figures always resonates deeply with him, often serving as tributes.
Inspirations Behind Officer Torres
Morales revealed that his characterization is an homage to family members and acquaintances who served. Specifically, he cited his late cousin, Master Sergeant Amos Diaz, as a major influence.
He described Diaz as a "super soldier," one of the nicest people he knew, built powerfully like Mike Tyson, though shorter. This real-life figure shared a similar imposing stature to co-star Alan Ritchson’s build.
The Physicality of the Shoot and Character Separation
Morales noted that co-star Alan Ritchson underwent intense physical training for the demanding production. While Morales avoided the initial rigorous training, he acknowledged the cast was in excellent shape.
Because Morales joined the production later, he missed the initial bonding period of the main cast. He found this separation advantageous for his role. As a First Sergeant, his character is not there for emotional support but to "weed out the weak and the fragile."
Achieving Realism Over Science Fiction
Morales stated that his approach to playing a hard-nosed authority figure was inspired by figures like R. Lee Ermey from 'Full Metal Jacket.' He loves sinking his teeth into such demanding roles with abandon.
He emphasized the goal of grounding the performance in reality. "The script had an innate realism. It didn't feel like a sci-fi movie," Morales explained. Instead, it felt like a real story that suddenly shifts into the extraordinary.
Reflections on Past Roles and Future Hopes
Morales is no stranger to high-stakes action, having previously played the villain Gabriel in the last two 'Mission: Impossible' films opposite Tom Cruise. He felt a sense of earned credibility when joining that franchise, noting the respect from his co-stars.
He praised director Patrick Hughes for his infectious joy for filmmaking, which made actors want to deliver their best work. The 'Mission: Impossible' shoot spanned five years across two movies, involving significant stunt training.
Regarding a potential 'War Machine' sequel, Morales expressed enthusiasm for a future confrontation. He hopes Officer Torres gets a chance to fight a killer alien battle robot, emphasizing that fighting intelligently is as crucial as brute strength. He prefers working with experienced survivors over strong but inexperienced cadets.
