Digital personality and entrepreneur Emma Chamberlain recently offered listeners an inside look at her vintage shopping philosophy during an episode of the podcast, "The Run-Through," which aired this Tuesday.
Navigating the Online Vintage Maze
Chamberlain detailed her strategy for sourcing vintage items through digital channels. She admitted that her online search often relies heavily on platform algorithms.
"I kinda let the algorithm take me on a journey," Chamberlain stated, acknowledging the often-difficult nature of the internet. She added, "The internet—it is a mess. It is toxic, but I’m gonna use the algorithm to my benefit, if I can."
In-Person Treasure Hunting
While she utilizes online tools, Chamberlain prefers shopping for vintage items in person whenever her busy schedule permits. She shared some of her go-to physical locations with guest hosts Margaux Anbouba and Christian Allaire.
When visiting New York, Chamberlain recommends exploring Chinatown. She specifically shouted out the shop James Veloria, along with "all the little shops up in that little shopping center."
Closer to home in Los Angeles, the Rose Bowl Flea Market remains a consistent favorite. Chamberlain described the experience as "so wonderful and it’s massive and it’s so overwhelming, but it’s cool." She noted that the market "feels very LA, and it’s all in one place."
Her Unique Approach to Purchasing
When Chamberlain successfully locates a coveted item, her reaction is the opposite of haggling. She revealed that she prefers to show immense gratitude for the find.
"I am a tipper," she explained, emphasizing her appreciation. "I’m just so grateful I found it. I’m like, take the full price. Here’s also an extra $10. I’m just so lucky. I don’t want to buy something unless I’d pay more for it than it’s worth."
Met Gala Correspondent Update
The discussion also touched upon Chamberlain's professional role with Vogue. She is set to return to the Met Gala carpet this May as the publication's special correspondent, a position she has held for several consecutive years.
Chamberlain expressed humility regarding the role, stating, "I don’t expect anything. Every year I’m like, ‘This could be the last year.’ I am so grateful that I’ve ever been able to do it."
Inside the Vogue Vintage Market
The episode also featured insights from Vogue Runway’s Irene Kim and producer Alex Jhamb Burns. They provided listeners with details from the second annual Vogue Vintage Market, which took place last Saturday.
Kim and Burns interviewed attendees who had waited in line for hours. They discussed the specific vintage pieces the shoppers were hoping to find and what they ultimately purchased.
