Following the 2025 season, the Philadelphia Eagles underwent a significant restructuring of their offensive coaching staff. The team conducted an extensive search for a new offensive coordinator, interviewing 17 candidates and bringing seven in for second interviews.
New Offensive Hires Bolster Eagles Staff
The Eagles ultimately named Sean Mannion as the new offensive coordinator. In addition to Mannion, the team added Josh Grizzard as the passing game coordinator and Jerrod Johnson as a senior offensive assistant.
While hiring three top candidates seems positive, it raises the potential for a "too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen" scenario with several high-level offensive minds working together.
Sirianni's Philosophy on Coaching Depth
Speaking at the NFL’s annual meetings on Monday, Head Coach Nick Sirianni dismissed these concerns directly. “I’ve never had a scenario where you have too many good coaches,” Sirianni stated.
Sirianni highlighted that adding Johnson was a “unique opportunity” after Johnson and the Houston Texans parted ways. He noted his prior coaching relationship with Johnson and Johnson’s familiarity with the system the Eagles intend to run in 2026.
“Just an opportunity to add another good coach,” Sirianni explained. “Everybody has to understand their role. That’s my job as the head football coach, to explain what roles are, what people’s job description is.” Sirianni added that he knows Johnson is a great team player from past experience.
Addressing Offensive Underperformance
The impetus for the overhaul was the Eagles' disappointing offensive output in 2025. The team finished 24th in yards and 19th in points, results deemed insufficient for their talent level.
This poor performance led to the departure of former offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo and the subsequent search that landed on Mannion, who is expected to implement a new offensive scheme.
Praise for New Offensive Coordinator Sean Mannion
Mannion, 33, has only two seasons of coaching experience, both with the Packers, but had a long NFL playing career as a quarterback. The Eagles were reportedly impressed during the interview process.
Sirianni shared what he has observed about Mannion since his hiring. “Relentless worker. He is relentless,” Sirianni said. “He’s always in there, he’s always working, he’s always thinking about the game and how to help our players and put the best product on the field.”
Sirianni confirmed that seeing Mannion's work ethic firsthand validated the hiring decision. He admired Mannion’s “relentless in his pursuit of getting better as a football coach to help our guys and our team get better.”
Strategic Depth for Future Staff Movement
Beefing up the coaching staff also provides a strategic advantage for the organization. Sirianni acknowledged that two of his previous offensive coordinators were hired away as head coaches during his five-year tenure.
Sirianni admitted that adding coaches like Johnson provides contingency planning. “If this happens, I’ve got a lot of good pieces to be able to move into place to take over if ultimately we win games and people come looking for our coaches.”
While future staff movement is a potential benefit, the immediate focus remains on performance. The success of the revamped coaching staff in getting the Eagles offense back on track in 2026 remains to be seen.
