A Houston mother, Lisbeth Morejon, enrolled her 3-year-old son at Whiz Children’s Academy seeking socialization for him and morning work time for herself. This arrangement quickly turned alarming after just four days of attendance.
Initial Concerns and Daycare Enrollment
Morejon chose the facility because it was conveniently located about six minutes from her home. She hoped the environment would help her son, who was very attached to her, gradually adjust to being around other children.
She noted that her son cried during drop-offs, which she initially attributed to typical separation anxiety. However, she became uneasy when he was first placed in one room and then moved to a classroom designated for older children.
Disturbing Drop-Off Incidents
One specific drop-off remains vivid for Morejon. She recalled her son clinging to her, begging her not to leave him there. “And he told me, ‘Oh mom, help me. I don’t want to be here. Help me,’” she recounted.
Despite these pleas, Morejon trusted the academy, believing the staff was responsible for protecting the children. Staff members informed her that her son had left his classroom multiple times without permission and required correction.
Morejon countered this, stating that supervision and safety were the daycare’s responsibility if the child managed to leave the room.
Discovery of Injuries and Emergency Visit
The extent of her son’s injuries became apparent upon pickup. When Morejon entered the classroom, her son ran to her crying, revealing two distinct scratches on his face.
The employee handing him over spoke English, leading Morejon to plan returning the next day to seek answers in Spanish. Initially, she suspected the scratches occurred during play with another child.
Bruises Found Later That Evening
The true scope of the situation emerged later that evening while helping her son change clothes. Morejon discovered bruises “all over the place,” specifically on his arms, back, and crotch area, accompanied by swelling.
When she touched a bruised spot on his arm, her son reacted in pain. This prompted her to seek immediate medical attention rather than waiting until the following morning.
Medical Evaluation and Behavioral Changes
At the hospital, initial X-rays appeared normal. However, a subsequent physical examination led doctors to a different conclusion regarding the bruises.
Morejon stated that the doctor concluded the extensive bruising across his body was consistent with harm to a child. Medical staff noted that her son was not responding typically when questioned.
The hospital provided treatment that night and scheduled two follow-up appointments. Doctors advised her to return to the daycare the next day to ascertain the cause of the injuries.
Emotional Aftermath
Since the incident, Morejon reports her son has not been himself. He now expresses fear about sleeping alone and tells her, “Mom, don’t go. Mom, they’re going to hit me.”
She described him as usually calm and non-aggressive, making it difficult for her to believe the injuries resulted from typical roughhousing. Her original goal was socialization, but the experience resulted in fear for her son.
Confrontation with Whiz Children’s Academy
The following morning, Morejon returned to Whiz Children’s Academy with medical documentation. She spoke with a Spanish-speaking staff member before attempting to speak with the director.
Morejon requested surveillance footage covering all four days of her son’s attendance to understand what occurred. She was informed that the cameras could only be viewed live and did not record any footage.
“I told her, even the worst camera in this country, even if it’s 24 hours, has to have some kind of camera record,” Morejon expressed regarding her frustration with the response.
Unanswered Questions
During her visit, Morejon also observed older children, around seven or eight years old, eating in the same area as the preschoolers, which she found inappropriate.
The director promised to investigate and call her back, but Morejon reported that the call never materialized. KPRC 2 later approached the academy, where a worker off-camera claimed the incident “did not happen here” before refusing further comment.
Morejon continues to seek a basic explanation: who injured her son? She is committed to seeking ongoing medical and emotional support for her child, aiming to ensure no other child endures a similar experience.
