Man Found Deceased Following Early Morning Incident Near Cannery Row
Monterey police confirmed that a dying man was located on the beach on Saturday, March 28, several hours after a hotel’s surveillance system recorded an individual plunging from an elevated patio.
The discovery occurred shortly before noon on Saturday. Initial police reports suggested the man might have been involved in an altercation that took place outside a bar along Cannery Row earlier that morning.
Early Morning Fight and Police Pursuit
Officers first encountered the fight near the Salty Seal Pub at approximately 1:09 a.m. One participant in the brawl was found unconscious on the ground and subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
The second combatant fled the scene on foot. Police pursued the fleeing individual for about a quarter-mile along Cannery Row before losing sight of him near the Plaza de Monterey. This public area overlooks the bay, situated close to the Monterey Plaza Hotel.
The injured man who remained at the scene reportedly “did not wish to provide information about the incident,” according to the official police account.
Surveillance Footage Triggers Search
Around 8:15 a.m. Saturday, an employee at the Monterey Plaza Hotel contacted authorities. The employee reported that the hotel’s security cameras had captured footage of a person vaulting over a patio railing at approximately 1:10 a.m.
The patio in question is situated roughly 25 feet above the rocky shoreline below.
Recovery and Tragic Outcome
Following the report, police initiated a search of the area beneath the hotel, utilizing assistance from a Monterey Fire Department boat crew. The search concluded around 11:53 a.m.
Authorities located a man “some distance from where he would have fallen.” The individual was rushed to a hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died.
