Rotterdam Council Member Faces Photo Authenticity Questions
Patricia Reichman, a politician in the Netherlands who recently won a seat on the Rotterdam city council, has denied allegations that her official candidate photograph was artificially generated using AI technology. The photograph, published in a local newspaper, sparked controversy due to its significant differences from Reichman’s actual appearance.
Discrepancy Between Photos and Current Appearance
The candidate photo provided by Reichman depicts a much younger-looking individual with differing facial features compared to her current appearance. Reichman explained the discrepancy, stating, “The photo in the neighborhood paper was of too low a resolution, so I ran it through an online tool to boost the pixel count.” She firmly maintains the image is genuinely her, attributing any changes to medication she is currently taking, which she says will soon be discontinued.
Residency Concerns and Party Response
Further complicating the situation, it was discovered that Reichman does not reside in the neighborhood she was elected to represent. Reichman countered this claim, stating she maintains two residences. Leefbaar Rotterdam, the political party Reichman represents, released a statement addressing the concerns.
Leefbaar Rotterdam's Statement on the Photo
“The photo has clearly been heavily edited with AI and is not a realistic representation,” the statement read. The party emphasized that the edited photo was not used in official campaign materials or publications by the Municipality of Rotterdam, but was submitted to the neighborhood newspaper personally by Reichman.
Expulsion from Party
Leefbaar Rotterdam has requested Reichman relinquish her seat, but she has refused. As a result, the party has announced its decision to expel her. “When the information provided during the job interview proves not to correspond with reality, there is no basis of trust to continue working together,” the party concluded in its statement. Despite Reichman’s denials, evidence suggests she utilized an AI image generator, providing a source photo of herself as input.
