Fatal Crash Investigation Underway in Southern California
A serious collision on a freeway connector ramp in Southern California has resulted in a DUI and murder arrest. Authorities apprehended a 61-year-old man on Sunday following an incident where his sedan struck a Jeep, causing it to fall into the Sweetwater River.
The crash occurred shortly after 12:50 a.m. The involved vehicles were traveling west on State Route 54, approaching the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. This section of Route 54 serves as the dividing line between National City and Chula Vista.
Details of the Freeway Collision
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Wessendorf, the driver of a Volkswagen EOS collided with the rear of a Jeep Liberty. The exact cause of the collision remains under active investigation by authorities.
The impact forced the Jeep off the roadway. The SUV plunged down from the ramp, landing fully submerged in the Sweetwater River below the structure.
Tragic Outcome and Arrest
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to extricate both occupants from the submerged Jeep. Despite immediate efforts, neither the driver nor the passenger could be saved.
The identities of the deceased individuals have been withheld pending notification of their next of kin by the county Medical Examiner’s Office. The arrested suspect, identified through jail records as Douglas Guyton, is currently being held without bail.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Guyton is being held on suspicion of both murder and driving under the influence. Online jail records confirm his detention status. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Thursday.
