De Niro on Trump's Citizenship Argument
De Niro described the Trump administration’s argument – that children born in the U.S. to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily should not automatically be granted citizenship – as a tactic to remove unwanted individuals. “It’s that simple,” he stated.
Responding to Criticism
The actor and activist, known for his outspoken criticism of Trump, has faced backlash for his strong rhetoric. He has previously used harsh language to describe the former president, including calling him a “piece of sh--t” and expressing a desire to physically assault him. When questioned about being labeled with “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS), De Niro dismissed it as “nonsense.”
Why People Dislike Trump, According to De Niro
“People don’t like him for a reason,” De Niro asserted. “All the terrible things he’s done – if he did nice things, then he could have, he had the chance – he became president – to do nice things, not hateful, retribution, not – just, outright mean things. If he did nice things, people would love him. But he’s got a problem. He’s damaged.”
Broader Concerns About Trump
De Niro stated that “everything” about Trump bothers him, referencing widely known concerns. He added, “Everything that we all know now.” Reports from Wednesday indicated the Supreme Court appeared likely to reject Trump’s argument on birthright citizenship.
Recent Activism and Previous Statements
De Niro recently participated in a “No Kings” protest in New York City, where he stated the chants were effectively “No Trump.” He argued that Trump poses a unique threat to freedoms and security compared to other presidents. “He must be stopped and he must be stopped now,” De Niro declared, also referring to members of Trump’s cabinet as “goons.”
The Supreme Court arguments lasted over two hours, with Attorney General Pam Bondi and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also in attendance. De Niro sat in seats reserved for guests of the justices, according to the Associated Press.
