Star Wars actor Sam Witwer has shared how his long-held ideas for Darth Maul have finally been realized in the new series focusing on the character. Known for voicing numerous roles in the galaxy far, far away, Witwer is particularly associated with his portrayal of Maul.

Maul's Evolution: From Apprentice to Independent Force

Following Maul’s unexpected return to the Star Wars universe, Witwer’s performance significantly contributed to the villain’s expanded role in the franchise’s mythology. He previously pitched ideas for Maul’s development on various shows, but lacked the opportunity to explore them fully.

“Everything,” Witwer stated when asked about incorporating his ideas into the new series. “I mean, this is a transitional period in his life. If you go back to The Phantom Menace, he was doing what Palpatine trained him to do — create a power base, manipulate groups of people, create armies, all that stuff… in Solo: A Star Wars Story, he’s an old man at the end of his rope, trying to figure out what he’s supposed to do with himself now that the world has passed him by.”

Exploring Maul's Vulnerability

He continued, “This story, he’s in his prime, and he’s starting to really think for himself. So, in order to really tell that story, you do have to come at it from a vulnerable point of view. What are the things that he’s struggling with? There were a couple of things that I brought up to Dave [Filoni] back in the day that I thought Maul would be struggling with, and I’m happy to say that they are in this show.”

While Witwer refrained from revealing specific details to avoid spoilers, he indicated that his ideas are central to the series’ narrative. This marks the first time Maul will be the primary focus of a Star Wars on-screen project, offering fans a new perspective on the character.

A Relatable Villain?

The exploration of Maul’s internal struggles is intended to provide audiences with a deeper understanding of his motivations, even if they don’t condone his actions. Witwer emphasized the importance of understanding Maul’s perspective, suggesting his ideas aim to ground the character in relatable themes and emotions.

The series highlights Maul’s vendetta against the Empire, fueled by his resentment towards his former master, Darth Sidious. This pursuit of revenge stems from a feeling of being discarded after his defeat on Naboo, and a lost vision of ruling the galaxy alongside Palpatine. He is now attempting to prove himself, albeit for reasons rooted in a desire for power.

Previous appearances hinted at Maul’s complex emotions, and the new series will delve into these previously unexplored aspects of his life as he seeks to build a criminal empire and establish his own legacy.
